Course Description

As renal dietitians, counseling skills are everything. We are trained heavily in motivational interviewing and taught to speak "patient first" language. But even with this training, there can be a struggle with effectuating change, knowing how to approach certain hard situations, and ultimately knowing how we can develop our patient-professional relationships so that patients get the help they want and need and we don't burn out in the process.

The real key to counseling - the thing we think "comes naturally" or doesn't is relationships.

That's why this course is a must for every renal dietitian. It takes a step back from motivational interviewing. It gives incredible clarity on the foundational counseling principles of relationship development - which is the key for literally everything.

No matter if you've been a dietitian for 1 month or 30 years this course will help you see a unique perspective on how to approach your patients and make an impact even in the most difficult situations. Here's a sample of what we'll be covering:

  • How a strong patient/dietitian relationship can improve clinical outcomes
  • Tools for building a mutual respect and trust in a patient/practitioner relationship even with the most difficult patients
  • Practical skills to make your first meeting a springboard for all future interactions
  • How to help clients realize their goals and stay focused on the objective/common goal
  • Creating a safe space as a way to increase productivity towards the desired outcome
  • Awareness of your personal communication style
  • Trouble-shooting common pitfalls and tricky situations
  • +Bonus info on Solution Focused Therapy

Leveraging the power of an outside perspective and the real-life experience of renal dietitian in dialysis, Jessianna Saville, MS, RDN, CSR and Tyrene Hartsell MS, NCC are bringing a dynamic new perspective to counseling.

Tyrene brings her gift of counseling to renal dietitians from a very different background - high school counseling and helps us apply this unique skill set as we teach, support, and encourage our patients.
